Big Boy Bed!!!

Jameson passed another milestone this past week that made me want to cry because I continue to wonder where my little baby went!! He has officially (and successfully) been in a big boy bed for a week now! Darin and I had been talking about whether or not we should transition him for awhile. My outlook was why fix something that isn't broken - the child sleeps 10-13 hours at night and takes 3-4 hour naps! WHY MESS WITH PERFECTION?! But, we also thought about the fact that it may make sense to do it before baby sister gets here so that he has plenty of time to adjust. Plus, if I do end up getting a c-section, which is most likely, this will be easier for me since I won't have to lift  him into his crib.

So, on Memorial Day, we were all playing in his room and we mentioned the idea of a big boy bed. Well, should have known there would be no turning back at that point! He was SO excited and squealed with excitement at the idea. So, Darin went and got his tools and the two of them started to take apart one of the last things that still made my Jameson a "baby" in my eyes - his crib! Jameson had a great time helping his Daddy and was galloping around the room chanting, "Big boy bed. Big boy bed." over and over - http://youtu.be/g67R0_6s8mM. I was observing all of this on the sidelines while trying not to cry and/or run for the hills at the thought of my awesome sleeper being ripped from me! But, watching his excitement, I couldn't help but smile! Once the boys assembled the new bed, Jameson jumped in and out of the bed a few times and had a blast jumping on the bed! I was hoping that all this excitement would be a good sign that nap time would maybe not be terrible...

Fast forward a few hours and it was time for us to head upstairs for nap time. I actually thought it was about 45 minutes too early and didn't think he would be tired enough. But, Darin figured we had better get a head start since it may take longer to get him settled. I guess both of us were kind of correct because it took about an hour and a half before he finally fell asleep! He was excited about the idea of the big boy bed, but just didn't want to actually sleep in it! He wanted us to lay by him too, which we did for awhile, but he still wouldn't actually fall asleep. We had to "threaten" to make it back into a crib a few times, which made him super sad...and made me feel awful! So, we quickly told him we would keep it as is, but that he needed to go to sleep. We decided that we would probably just have to walk out and let him fuss for a little bit. Well, that broke my heart - partially because I felt like we just stripped his comfort from him and I am sure it was partially due to the fact that I don't think I was quite ready for this transition! Darin and I both took turns going back in and eventually he laid down and slept for over 2 hours. Not bad! And, when we went in to get him after he woke up, we told him how proud we were of him and made it seem like sleeping in his big boy bed was the best thing ever! He was so very proud of himself!

I was definitely apprehensive for bed time. But, surprisingly, it was pretty painless. It took about 20 minutes until he finally passed out, but all it took was me rocking him for less than five minutes and then he was ready to get in his bed. Once he fell asleep, it was if nothing ever changed - he slept solidly through the night just as he always had! Thank goodness!!! When I went to wake him up in the morning, he jumped right up and squealed, "yay, I slept in my big boy bed!". So darn cute!! And, the rest of the week went just as smoothly. No major hiccups - no sleep regressions - no tears. My kid rocks :). He still gets so proud of himself when he wakes up in his bed and he loves to tell people that he is sleeping in a big boy bed. I really think that involving him in the assembly of the bed and then garnering tons of excitement was what made the transition successful. I hope the transition to an actual double bed will be just as easy....but, we won't cross that bridge for awhile!!

Helping Daddy!

He was SO excited!!

Jumping on the bed is so much fun!!

Successful first day in his big boy bed!
